The federal government has ended its free meals program, which was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2022-23 school year, the price for breakfast will be $1.60 for elementary students (breakfast for Kindergarten students is free) and $1.70 for secondary students. The price for lunch will be $2.95 for elementary students, $3.15 for middle school students, and $3.20 for high school students. Free and reduced price meals will be provided to families who need help covering the cost of meals.
How do I apply for educational benefits?
To find out if you qualify, fill out an Educational Benefits Form (also known as Free & Reduced Application) at www.schoolcafe.com/mahtomedips (or via the School Cafe app), sign in and click “apply” or complete the Application for Educational Benefits following the instructions. A new application must be submitted each year. How do I know if my family will qualify?
- Any household member who currently participates in the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP), or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) and foster children can get free meals without reporting household income.
- Family or child is homeless
- The total income of household members is within the USDA guidelines (page 2 of this pdf)

If your family qualifies, the program can provide your student(s) with free school breakfast and lunch and many other supports, including reduced fees for sports/activities, instruments, field trips, and more.
