In order to ensure that all children are ready for school, our goal is:
During the 2018-2019 school year had 84% of children screened between their third and fifth birthday. Our district will increase the percent of children screened between their third and fifth birthday to 87% during the 2020-2021 school year.

Our results:

During COVID, we saw a decrease in the number of families who brought children in to be screened. During the 20-21 school year, 73% of children ages 3 to 5 participated in preschool screening.

Action Steps used for 2020-2021:

  • We started weekly appointments for Early Childhood Screening rather than four mass screenings per year.
  • We offered virtual Learning Early Childhood Screening options to families who were not comfortable attending in person.
  • In 2021 Early Childhood staff was trained in a new screening tool recommended by the MN Department of Education, called Minneapolis Preschool Screening Instrument-Revised (MPSI-R). This developmental screening instrument is for children ages 3 through 5 years 11 months and includes specific English language learner criteria.

Some strategies we plan to initiate or continue during the 2021-2022 school year:

  • Mahtomedi Early Childhood will continue the weekly appointment system implemented in 2020-21. We screened approximately twenty more students during this new system.
  • We are making efforts to screen all 3-year-olds in our program by the end of the school year.
  • We plan to create a more robust system to reach out to all district families with students ages 3-5 to bring awareness to Early Childhood Screening by mailing information to all families of 3-year-old children as indicated by the census data as well as following up with additional information using both district and school communications already in place.
