GLOSSARY OF TERMS:

ACCELERATION - when a student is moved one or more grades ahead.  There can be single subject acceleration (most commonly math) or whole grade acceleration.|

ADVANCED - Grade level coursework taught at a higher/deeper level.   Usually for students who grasp concepts quickly, and then go deeper into the grade-level content.

COMPACTED - grade level, enriched learning.  Usually for students who grasp concepts quickly, and then go deeper into the grade-level content.

CBMs - or Curriculum Based Measurement, used to test students' reading fluency.

CogAT - measures a student's logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.  Has three parts: a verbal, non-verbal, and quantitative analysis.

DIFFERENTIATION - providing options in the learning content to meet the various needs of students.  Teachers can differentiate the content (different level books on the same topic), process (different ways to take in the information such a read vs listen), or product (different ways to show what you know).

FAST BRIDGE - sometimes called aFAST testing, and measures students' proficiency in Math and Reading.  Schools may administer it in any combination of fall, winter or spring.  It is not mandated by the state but provides valuable ongoing progress data..

MAP - Measures of Academic Progress test - that measures students' proficiency in Math and Reading.  Schools may administer it in any combination of fall, winter or spring.  It is not mandated by the state but provides valuable ongoing progress data..

MCAs - Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, the state mandated test(s) all MN students take beginning in 3rd grade that measures their proficiency in Math and Reading, and in 5th grade Science as well.

PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE - allows students to wrestle with learning content without rescuing them when they don't know.  The adult role changes from teacher/helper, to facilitator.

RICH TASK - a learning activity with a low entry level (that allows anyone to participate) and a high ceiling (that allows bright students to keep going), with opportunities for creative thinking, multiple ways to present learning, and other components.

RUNNING RECORDS - measures a student's reading fluency (words per minute), and comprehension.  Helps teachers determine a student's reading level.

TIER 1+ - sometimes called 1+, an enriched level of learning, but not at a higher grade level.  Usually for students who grasp concepts quickly, and then go deeper into the grade-level content.
